What does "deactivate" mean? Will this erase my data?

When I follow these instructions, I get a screen prompting me to "deactivate" my Mac. There is no description of what this means. Will it erase all my data?

Update. A technician I chatted with informed me there would be no data loss. I completed the deactivation and reset my password. The computer restarted and I logged in to my account. I lost some stored passwords but the rest of my data looks fine.

The technician did not explain what deactivation is, but I think it has something to do with this activation security feature https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208987
