Is this issue affecting emails from all or only specific contacts? E.g. affected emails are from one person or one organisation?

Is this affecting all type of attachments or PDF files only?

Try this! Make a PDF yourself on your iPhone, then send it yourself via Mail app on your iPhone and see if you can open it when the message is received.

How to make PDF on iPhone and attach to email message:

  1. Open this (or any other) website in Safari app on your iPhone.
  2. Take a screenshot of it (for instructions see https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200289).
  3. Tap screenshot preview when appears in bottom left on the screen.
  4. Change view from ‘screenshot’ to ‘full page’.
  5. Tap Share icon, then tap Mail to attach document as PDF to new email message screen.
  6. Now, add your email into ‘To’ field and make sure same address is used in ‘From’ before you send the email.
  7. Go to Inbox, and refresh it til the message is received.
  8. Check if you can open attachment in received email.
  9. If you have another email from other provider, do all above steps again checking with that other email account too.

If you can open attached file on both accounts, then your issue is with emails from some specific contacts. If you can open attachment in only one email you have send yourself, then there is some issue with your account that cannot open attachments. If same issue is with both emails, then something is wrong with Mail app on your iPhone.

What to do:

A. Restart your iPhone:

See if restarting your iPhone fixes this. Go Here: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

B. Use a New App Password:

Do you use an App Password? If so, try a new App Password. Sometimes, changes (i.e. updates) are made to the iPad, and then mail server syncing becomes an issue (which is what a new App Password it intended to fix). For example, go here for gmail: Sign in with App Passwords - Google Account Help - Google
