Merging existing apple cards

My wife and I both have Apple cards. We did this because we read that it was an option to merge existing accounts into one family account. We kept getting an error for this and contacted support. First we dealt with Goldman Sachs. We continued to a phone call that said there was no reason we couldn’t do this. Then we contacted Apple support and got a phone call for this. The support person told me to cancel my card because it was not possible to merge existing accounts. (I have had many credit cards over the years and never was told to cancel a line of credit.) I asked why multiple sources said it was possible to merge existing accounts and they said they didn’t know.

Is there a way to merge existing accounts or not?

Because it’s really confusing that the Apple website says that we can and Apple support said we cannot. (It’s also concerning to have support to ambivalent about our family’s credit and finances.)

Have you set of a Family Sharing Group? If not, it needs to be setup on at least one iPhone. Here is a link to a support article on setting up Family Sharing Groups,

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212020

Here’s how to invite someone to Apple Card Family and combine credit limits:

  1. Open the Wallet app and tap your Apple Card;
  2. Tap the more button;
  3. Under People, tap Share My Card, then tap Continue;
  4. Select a member of your Family Sharing group. To invite someone to join your Family Sharing group, tap Invite Someone;
  5. To invite an account co-owner, tap Become Co-Owners;
  6. Follow the instructions on your screen to provide the requested information;
  7. Tap Send Invitation, then authenticate with your passcode.

Have you tried those steps before? If so, and it didn’t work, what was the error code and message?

This is on the an Apple page from April:

  • “Existing Apple Card customers can also merge their Apple Card accounts, giving the flexibility of a higher shared credit limit while keeping the lower APR of the two accounts.3“

https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2021/04/apple-introduces-apple-card-family-enabling-people-to-share-apple-card-and-build-credit-together/

and the footnote 3 leads to the page on How to Apply… (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209257) which states the following on Footnote 4

“Each co-owner is jointly and individually responsible for all balances on the co-owned Apple Card including amounts due on the existing co-owner’s account before the accounts are merged. Each co-owner will be reported to credit bureaus as an owner on the account. In addition, co-owners will have full visibility into all account activity and each co-owner is responsible for the other co-owner’s instructions or requests. Credit reporting includes…”

This is from the online site, footnote 1: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212020

  1. Apple Card is issued by Goldman Sachs Bank USA, Salt Lake City Branch. Each co-owner is jointly and individually responsible for all balances on the co-owned Apple Card including amounts due on the existing co-owner’s account before the accounts are merged. Each co-owner will be reported to credit bureaus as an owner on the account. In addition, co-owners will have full visibility into all account activity and each co-owner is responsible for the other co-owner’s instructions or requests. Credit reporting includes positive and negative payment history, credit utilization, and additional information. Card usage and payment history may impact each co-owner's credit score differently because each individual's credit history will include information that is unique to them. Addition of a new co-owner is subject to credit approval and general eligibility requirements. Learn more about Apple Card eligibility requirements. Either co-owner can close the account at any time which may negatively impact your credit and you will still be responsible for paying all balances on the account.

You’ll need to delete the old Family Sharing Group. The Organizer of the group should remove any remaining members and then select >> Stop Using Family Sharing << from bottom of Organizer role page (see photo),

Once the old Family Sharing Group is removed, please start a new group from your iPhone, with your Apple ID/iCloud Account.

Then follow steps above to invite spouse as a Co-owner.

So we followed this and we got all the way to the combined cards and then we got an error that says

  • The account status on one of your Apple Cards make you ineligible to combine accounts.

there is a balance on one of the cards. But it does not include any Apple products or financing. Could this be the issue?

We talked to Goldman Sachs and they said there was nothing on either account that made them ineligible.

There is a “pending” status on her card for an invite that still shows up after turning off Family Sharing. We have no idea what that means or how to get rid of it. We contacted Apple and the response was basically “we don’t know either.” I’m wondering if that is holding it up.

We did all of this multiple times. It did removed the pending status on my wife’s phone. When I try to add her as co-owner from my phone, there is no hanging pending notification. It still doesn’t allow us to merge.

I saw someone on Reddit was told there can be no balance at all. But in response many people stated they were able to merge cards with a balance.

Apple Support told me we cannot merge two cards and suggested I cancel my account. (This was particularly frustrating because it’s not just contrary to what everything says but bad advice.) GS still says they have no idea why it won’t work.

We talked to support before I asked the question.

We turned off Family Sharing again (removed the group from the Organizer Family Sharing phone). And then started a new Family and I sent a request for a co-owner. We got the “unable to merge” message again. We tried it again with my wife starting a new Family Sharing group as Organizer. We got the same message.

This happened before and we contacted support. The first time my wife was connected to Goldman Sachs. They said there was no problem with the account that would prevent it. The second time, we contacted Apple support. Apple told us that we cannot merge two Apple Cards and when I asked why the website says we can, they said “I don’t know.” And then suggested I cancel my card and become a co-owner on my wife’s card (which has a lower credit limit, oddly.) I mentioned the “pending” thing and they said that didn’t matter. That prompted me to post here - because the support staff seemed to know less than we did.

You can each try logging out of your Apple ID/iCloud account, restarting your iPhone, then logging back into your account. Sometimes a hard restart is better. This has solved similar issues, not sure if it’ll help in your case. Here is a support article on force restarting iPhones,

https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/force-restart-iphone-iph8903c3ee6/ios

Not sure any of this will resolve the issue, but worth a try.
