Merging existing apple cards

My wife and I both have Apple cards. We did this because we read that it was an option to merge existing accounts into one family account. We kept getting an error for this and contacted support. First we dealt with Goldman Sachs. We continued to a phone call that said there was no reason we couldn’t do this. Then we contacted Apple support and got a phone call for this. The support person told me to cancel my card because it was not possible to merge existing accounts. (I have had many credit cards over the years and never was told to cancel a line of credit.) I asked why multiple sources said it was possible to merge existing accounts and they said they didn’t know.

Is there a way to merge existing accounts or not?

Because it’s really confusing that the Apple website says that we can and Apple support said we cannot. (It’s also concerning to have support to ambivalent about our family’s credit and finances.)

Have you set of a Family Sharing Group? If not, it needs to be setup on at least one iPhone. Here is a link to a support article on setting up Family Sharing Groups,

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212020

Here’s how to invite someone to Apple Card Family and combine credit limits:

  1. Open the Wallet app and tap your Apple Card;
  2. Tap the more button;
  3. Under People, tap Share My Card, then tap Continue;
  4. Select a member of your Family Sharing group. To invite someone to join your Family Sharing group, tap Invite Someone;
  5. To invite an account co-owner, tap Become Co-Owners;
  6. Follow the instructions on your screen to provide the requested information;
  7. Tap Send Invitation, then authenticate with your passcode.

Have you tried those steps before? If so, and it didn’t work, what was the error code and message?

OK, this is good information. Apple Support has several levels of support. You probably talked to tier on support. There are high levels you can request. In the past I’ve gone to tier 2, 3 and Enginnering. You should be able to get to tier 3. Responses from higher tiers will generally be call backs and may be several days before you get a response from higher tiers.

You need to be polite, but persistent.

Do not delete an Apple Card account and re-apply for a card. This could result in different Credit Limits and/or APRs.

You've got several options moving forward, continue to move forward with troubleshooting here in the community.

Go back to Apple Support and request higher tier levels to resolve your issue.

Wait for the public release of iOS 15 in September or October to resolve the issues, but no guarantee.

Please be aware that troubleshooting steps moving forward may involve backing up all the iPhones data, reinstalling the iOS and attempting all this again. Both higher level Apple Support may suggest this and I might too.

Im still willing to continue troubleshooting, but higher levels of Apple Support may be more beneficial. But may require more patience.

I hope this helps.
