Apple CarPlay microphone issues

I've experienced this issue for quite some time where when connected via wired connection, there appears to be no input from the cabin microphone during phone calls - it has to be switched to speaker on the phone to have a two-way conversation.

I've validated that the microphone hardware works by disconnecting the wire (shutting down CarPlay) and relying on BT to make a phone call.
