If your Mac starts up to an Apple logo or progress bar

Suggest shutdown by whatever means required and remove all external devices. Attach to charger and restart and immediately hold the Shift key until the Apple Logo appears then release. This is Safe Mode and will do a repair disk, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The computer will load slowly - normal. If successful - good. If not - please advise.
On that model, assuming it is the non-Retina version, the weak link is the hard drive cable. After 3-6 years of vibration of normal use and transport, the thin insulation can chafe against sharp edges on the mettal chassis and cause intermittent interruptions. Symptoms of a worn cable can mimic those of a failing hard drive.
Most of us who are familiar with that model recommend the cable be changed whenever you change the hard drive.
The cable is inexpensive (~US$16), available, and can be installed in under 30 minutes by a complete novice.
Same still not booting up even when I held the shift key when I started it up as you indicated.
Try the advise from @ leroydouglas above and post back what happens. Time permitting SVP
Thanks for your replies. I ended up having to put in the OS and it seems to be working.
Thank for the update and it is working well ! ?? So for the moment it appear to have fixed the issue.
It worked for a little while and then I shut it off and when I went back sam thing. I am reading that the hard drive maybe gone?
Thank you all for your replies. I went and bought a new hard drive and it seems to be working well.
