Audio Message not recording

When I try to record an audio message to send to someone, the recording panel comes up but it doesn't start recording. I have tried to press the red record button and try again several times but that doesn't work either. I have also tried restarting the Messages app and restarting the phone itself several times to no avail. Any ideas?
