That is an indication that your mac is not finding a valid file system to boot to.
Restart your mac while pressing and holding down the Command and R keys.
This will boot to your Recovery HD.
From the Utilities panel select Disk Utility.
Click on View in the menubar and select Show All Devices.
Highlight Macintosh HD (or whatever your macs Volume is called)
and click on First Aid, run this until you get the Green tick.
When you get the green tick restart your mac normally.
Also try starting up in Safe Mode.

Safe Mode takes a long time to start up so be patient.
If you are still out of luck, do you have a backup you can restore your mac from.
