My Desktop on -Cloud doesn't look like my actual desktop on my (brand new) MacBook Air, actually some files are missing entirely and changes aren't updated on a regular basis. Why?

It is like this since the start, when I started to work with this computer (about 4 weeks ago). Maybe I did something wrong while installing the computer or starting to work with it? Where did my desktop go? My wife's new M1 MacBook Air (MacOS 11.5.2) is suddenly having an issue finding files on the desktop. From Safari or Firefox if she tries to attach a photo stored on the desktop the message comes up that "Desktop can't be opened because the original can't be found". This started recently but no changes have been made. I did do a fresh install of Big Sur but it didn't help. What will fix this?

Previously you were saving documents locally ( literally on desktop screen ) , in new Mac iCloud Drive and desktops and documents box is turned on so all files / documents will now saved in iCloud.com see the article How iCloud Drive works - Apple Support
