I have a late 2012 MacBook pro. It was fully charged running on battery. As soon as I connected my iPhone 7 to charge it shut down. The iPhone was connected using the original in box iPhone charging cable. I tried the SMC restart but it won't work. Laptop also doesn't seem to be recognizing the charging cable either as the light keeps flickering.

I think your MacBook Pro has battery or power logic related issue. You'd better make Genius Bar reservation if your local retail Apple Store is open or find opened local Apple Authorized Service Provider to be examined your MacBook Pro there.
