MS Office migration issue - recent files not accessible after migrating to new macbook pro

I've just migrated to a new macbook pro. All files across ok. However I can't open files from the "recent" tab on powerpoint, excel or word. I've tried deleting the recent and opening fresh but that doesn't work ether consistently. How can I fix this?

Update your Microsoft software to be compatible.

The current Office for Mac; Office 365 or Office 2019 (One-time purchase) are OK with Catalina/Big Sur

Is the original MS Office license code needed to complete migration? I have two 2015 MacBook Pros each with its own license for MS Office 2019. MacBook A is mine; MacBook B is shared by wife and son (separate user IDs). I plan to migrate all wife's data with MS Office from MacBook B to a new 2021 Macbook Air. I don't know which license code goes with which MacBook Pro. Is there a way to determine which goes with what?

Maybe a question for the Microsoft Help Communities.
