I have an airport extreme with a 2tb drive, the airport bit has stopped working but the hard drive still seems to fire up. is there a way to use this drive as an external drive without airport

Yes. It can be removed and placed into either a drive caddy or enclosure and be used as an external drive. However, you should repartition/reformat it as it had a "special" partitioning scheme when used in the Time Capsule if you want to continue using it for file storage.
