Hello jrinman48.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you need help with finding a lens scope that you can use with our iPhone. Allow us to share some information with you. Currently, Apple only offers specific lenses that you can use with your device. They can be found in the link below:

lens - Apple

However, these lenses are not compatible with your specific iPhone model. It lists it only works up to the iPhone XS model. You might have to search third-party websites to see if they make a specific lens that works with the iPhone 12 Pro Max. If you do find one, checking their reviews might help to see which one might be best for you to use.

We hope this information is useful. Cheers.

I do not believe you understood my question. I do not wish to buy another lens scope. I am using a standard scope which I person might use to view something in the distance. Once I have it is focus on the scope I want to be able to position my iPhone to either take a picture through the scope or a video. I have been able to do this with my iPhone 12 ProMax....but mostly by trial and error. What I really need to know is what settings should I use and which of the three lens on the phone.

Also, is there an app to edit videos taken with the iPhone? Or can I edit them with using the iPhone itself...I want to delete portions of the videos.

Attached is an example of a photo through the scope using the iPhone.

Hey there!

Thanks for clarifying your issue/question. It really is helpful. You can edit and trim your video using your iPhone within the Photos app. You can also use the iMovie app for iOS devices. This app has plenty of features that allows you to edit your videos as well. We'll attach two helpful resources that show you how:

How to edit videos on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac - Apple Support

Edit video clips in Photos on iPhone - Apple Support

For your other question, you're asking which camera settings you should use. All adjustable settings can be found in Settings > Camera. Also, additional options and features are available within the Camera app itself while taking photos or videos. You had already came from a great resource that explains some features with your camera. We have another we can share with you:

Change advanced camera settings on iPhone - Apple Support

This resource does let you know that specific features such as Scene Detection and Lens Correction, are adjustable settings for your specific iPhone model. This might be an option that helps take better photos through scope. However, no settings specify that they can assist with taking photos through scopes.

Thanks for following up!

Your iPhone model has three lens. Which are, telephoto, wide, and ultra-wide as listed in the specifications of your device here: iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max - Technical Specifications - Apple

Just scroll down to the Camera section of the specifications. The three camera system (telephoto, wide and ultra-wide) allows you can take a picture at the regular length (wide) from your iPhone, one that’s zoomed-in (telephoto) or one that’s zoomed-out (ultra-wide). Each option can be selected while taking a photo or video. The resource you came from does explain how to use the Ultra Wide feature, which is one of the cameras:

About the Camera features on your iPhone - Apple Support

Review the section under "See beyond the frame". Other options are listed as 1x and 2.5x:

Just incase, we'd like to share some additional resources that can help you get the most out of your camera:
