Performance of 3 lenses

In my iPhone 13Pro I did an experiment to check the activity of all 3 Lenses, if i close lower lens & upper lense , automatically middle lense will start to capture the image; if i close middle lens and upper lense , lower lense will start but when i close middle and lower lenses upper lense will not start ; can any expert tell me how upper lense helps us in capturing the brilliant photos or whether upper lense is of no use ?

The lenses are used in different lighting conditions.

For example, the optical telephoto lens will be used as long as the phone determines it will result in a better photo than digital zoom on the wide lens would create.

Specifically, as light levels fall, a "3x" zoom will no longer use the telephoto optical lens but will instead be a digital zoom of the wide lens.

Likewise, if an object is too close for the wide lens to focus on, it will switch to the ultra wide lens unless you've specifically shut off the "Auto Macro" shift in your settings.
