Incoming Messages
Despite unmuting contacts, iPhone won't ping when they send a new message. Ringer is not on silent and volume is up on the phone.
How can I hear when a new message arrives?

Do you have an Apple Watch? If so, when your Apple Watch is on your wrist all notifications go to your watch instead of displaying and playing on your device. Once the watch is removed from your wrist, the iPhone will then have a need to play the sound.
