I don't want to use all my iPhone storage for photos. I have over 50GB of photos in iCloud going back to 2008 and I don't most of them taking up space in my phone. How can I store just recent (1 year? ) or important (Favorites) photos on my phone?

You cannot select a subset to keep on your phone. If your album is only 50 GB, turn on optimize photos on your phone, it will reduce the file size substantially. Settings > Photos
