M1 Mac Mini and old Epson Perfection 2450 scanner

I'm hoping I can still use my old (but still perfectly usable) Epson 2450 scanner with my new M1 Mac Mini. I went to the Epson website and downloaded their latest driver which was listed as being seemingly compatible with Mac Big Sur. I installed the driver, turned on the scanner, and it is being displayed in the "Printers/Scanners" section of my System Preferences dialog box. So far, so good. Now when I attempt to open the scanner, I get the classic message "You do not have permission to open the application EPSON Scanner”. Also, the scanner window appears to partially open and then it displays a separate message: "Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)" I don't know if this message is related to the permissions problem or a completely separate issue.

Okay, so I found the scanner app in my Library and changed the permissions. I also changed the permissions for the app's folder. Neither worked. I'm hoping someone can help me out. It appears like the computer has recognized the scanner but won't let me access it. Also, when I updated the driver it never asked whether it needed Rosetta2. Any help, advice, info will be greatly appreciated!

Thanking in advance,

David

Hello,

Could the article 'You do not have permission to open the application' when using a scanner on Mac - Apple Support possibly be of interest (with an adapted application name or place)? There have been similar problems for scanners from different manufacturers. For example, Canon has some details in https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/index?page=content&id=ART180175 .

Thanks for your answer but unfortunately it didn't work. I just got the same error dialog boxes. Epson does list and offer an updated driver for the 2450, but it only lists it as for operating system 11.x. And right below that there's this disclaimer: "There are no files available for the detected operating system. Please select a different operating system above." This is more than a bit confusing.

Thanks for your reply, but it didn't work. When I click on Image Capture, the scanner is listed as an option, but then when I click on the scanner name it just brings up the same error messages. My scanner is from 2011 (maybe older). I'm wondering if I need Rosetta2, but from what I've read online the MacOS should let you know if you need it when trying to activate an old app or device.

What to do:

A. Reset the Printing System:

  1. Go To: System Preferences
  2. Select: Printers & Scanners
  3. Right-Click: on this pinter
  4. Select: Reset printing system...
  5. Click: Reset button

and...

B. Inform Apple of This:

Epson probably has yet to do their part in M1 capabilities.  Apple and Canon are two separate companies. So, let Apple know about this incompatibility issue.  Apple won't get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what to include in updates to come.

So, Provide the Feedback:

  1. Go Here: Feedback - macOS - Apple
  2. Select: "Software/Hardware Compatibility" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Select: "Printing" for the "Feedback Area"
  4. Proceed from there as necessary
