iCloud, transferring large files from iPhone

I have been taking some big 4K 60fps videos and am struggling to get them off my Pro 12. The first videos I managed to upload to iCloud (my settings at the time had automatic iCloud sync / backup for photos and videos). However, my iCloud storage was quickly full and subsequent files I could not send this way. I disabled automatic sync / backup, deleted things and waited the month for them to hopefully clear. However, when I try to save or send link with iCloud the option does not appear. Do I need to reenable automatic sync / backup, which won’t last long because I have a number of large files? Or how else can I get these files off my phone. I have been trying for literally months.

Hey _g_t_1979,

Thank you for replying with extra information.

Have you tried going straight to iCloud.com and uploading the videos there? You can do that by following the steps under the 'Upload photos' section of Upload and download photos using iCloud.com

You can also transfer the videos to your Mac or PC, and have them stored on there, or try to upload them to iCloud once they are imported to the computer you have. Here is how to Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Have a great day!

Hello _g_t_1979,

Thank you for the information!

It can take some time for the photos to upload to iCloud, and you normally cannot see the photos that were uploaded to iCloud.com until the upload has finished. If the iPhone is still uploading the photos to iCloud, but it has been in the same place for 2 days, the upload may be stuck. Restart your iPhone if that is the case.

Is you iPhone up to date? Here is how to Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Once you have done that, Set up and use iCloud Photos using the steps here.

Hi Eric~F, thanks for getting back.

The trouble is, presumably because the files are large (one is 20GB, it's a video in 4K @ 60fps), the phone crashes during the import.

The iCloud version of doing this, I outlined my trouble above - is it that I must sync ALL of my photos and videos in order to be able to access these TWO individual video files via iCloud? Ideally, I could just select to save these two files and not all, because I don't have a premium storage account.

Surely this is not an unheard of problem, particularly with the 12 pro, lots of people must be using these cameras to record at the top spec and thus end up with large files like this. Are there any other options here?

Thanks!

New element - I've now bought extra iCloud storage in the hopes of accessing / transfering this way. I have enabled in iCloud Drive settings on my phone for photos. The bottom of the screen in Photos tells me that it's uploading and let's say 1/4 of the material is already done. When I log in to iCloud Drive on my laptop however it does not show any uploaded material. I'm also curious if it is not somehow stuck because I've been uploading for two days now. Is that normal? I had hoped to find an option not to upload everything but just select the items that I need (the large video files) one by one and create these share links that I managed one time months ago.

Many thanks.

Good morning MichelleT18,

I have now managed to upload / backup my photos in iCloud (it took a day and a half).

I am trying to download the large 4K video files in question and they appear smaller than the originals. According to the click throughs for info above it appears that they are meant to be original size. A week ago, somehow I managed, I have no idea how, to upload one of the same videos into a folder or save into a shared folder on my iPhone where it appears in original size (11GB). Attempts to download this file however always fail around the 6GB mark, I've tried dozens of times.

Please, can you tell me how to access files in original size or explain why they have not saved to iCloud in original size?

Can you tell me how I can then manage to download them from iCloud without the download failing? My WiFi is pretty standard, I'm not at Los Alamos but I should be able to download a video file even if it is large.

Please, can you help me to get these videos off my phone so that I can use them? The iPhone 12 Pro is hardly a burner consumer flip phone, I bought it to take these videos, SURELY there must be some way to get them off my phone? I have been working on this for literally actual months by now and I'm starting to go a bit mad.

Thanks!

Hi barberlives123,

Thanks for that. The trouble is that the download always fails. Always. With a file that is 22.1GB it tends to reach, say, 5GB downloaded, then fails. And the direct transfer via cable always crashes. My spouse has a MacBook Pro and Airdrop doesn't work either, and direct transfer via cable also crashes the phone. What do other people do? Is it simply not possible to get a file this large off the phone?

Thanks for any tips!
