usb keyboard not recognized

I recently "upgraded" to Big Sur 11.5.1 from a slightly older Big Sur. Now my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) does recognize my USB Apple keyboard. The keyboard works on my partners iMac and the USB ports work for my peripherals. So it is a software issue. I reset the PRAM, and then also unplugged the computer for a few minutes and that allowed the keyboard to work. This morning at startup, the same issue with the USB keyboard not working. I'm using a bluetooth keyboard right now but prefer my Apple extended keyboard.

Apple, please give me a solution that will last. And this is why I'm reluctant to do any "upgrades."

The latest version is 11.5.2. Update and post here if it fixes? If not, try all USB ports in sequence. If still an issue, post details on your keyboard version please.

It’s a discontinued model, probably at the end of its reliable life. I would replace with new https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MQ052LL/A/magic-keyboard-with-numeric-keypad-us-english. Switches between wired & BT automatically and charges last a loooongg time. Pair with the Magic 2 Trackpad or Mouse. Money well worth spent, can recommend!

Try resetting the SMC.

Thanks for the quick reply. Still having the problem even though I upgraded to 11.5.2. I tried the USB keyboard in all of the ports and still it doesn't respond. My other peripherals work in the ports. Keyboard is Apple Extended model A1243. I got it to work yesterday but can't today. Oddly, my partner's older extended keyboard will work on my iMac.
