spotlight does not work on big sur

Boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and check again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following; 

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts 

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

User wrote " I have Little Snitch, Spectacle but nothing else. " No chance Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and may require a Reinstallation of the OS.

I can say that Spotlight works just fine on my M1 mini running 11.5.2.

Assumptions:

• You have all of the meaningful search result categories for Spotlight selected
• You are familiar with the Spotlight keywords and their usage in Narrow your search results on Mac.
• You are not running HoudahSpot concurrently with Spotlight.

Does the following find all of your PDF documents that are greater than 3 pages, created after 01/01/2021, and have the keyword "vizsla" in them?

kind:pdf pages:>3 created:>01/01/2021 keyword:vizsla



or a Word DOCX document with the following text in it, and its extension is hidden?

kind:word +.docx "The stranger came early in February" kMDItemFSIsExtensionHidden:1

Both of these queries work on my Mac.
