Change appleid

Mini iPad 4 repaired, has old appleid email and don’t know password. Want it to match my iPhone and regular iPad but won’t let me. I’m fairly computer literate but be detailed as I’m 76 and need to have detailed instructions. Thanks for any help because I tried to follow apple’s instructions and it didn’t work.
