Big Sur
How can I complete the installation of Big Sur? It gets to the drum with my name and has been that way all day. I have tried restarting and it stops at the same place every time. What is the solution?

The drum icon is a user profile icon. Are you able to click the drum and type in your Mac password? If you had setup automatic login previously and you do not remember your password, it should prompt you to reset the password after a few attempts and failures. In most cases you will require your Apple ID / PW for iCloud to reset your password. If you enabled FileVault2 disk encryption it should still work as the recovery key should be stored in iCloud.

So you have a 2012 iMac correct?
CMD + R should have worked.
I am able to login but the black circle under my name just turns for an hour and then asks something about resetting all my passwords. I hit cancel and now it is just a screen with the pretty colors! nothing is happening.
Is it asking about reseting the Keychain? Is that what you mean? If you reset your password, then the Keychain's password is the old one. If you know the old password you can enter it to unlock the encrypted keychain which holds all your saved passwords, certificates, etc. If you do not know the old password, then you can reset the keychain and it will be renamed and a new keychain created using the current new password. If you use iCloud Keychain, those passwords should not be impacted.
I reset the keychain and all that happened is that the Big Sur screen with all the colors came up blank and is still there today Nothing is happening again. I am on to day 3 with this and no use of my iMac. What can I possibly do? I wish I had not updated to Big Sur! Too late for that now!
I have tried the command R several times and it comes back to the pretty Big Sur screen with nothing on it still. What is going on with the install? I am not computer savvy and don't know what to do next. I have tried to have patience with this because the internet is so slow here and power failures cause a complete restart. Pura Vida!
What do you think my best alternative is now? I truly appreciate your help and regret taking up your valuable time.
I am reinstalling again and it says there is about 2 hours and 20 minutes remaining. I am hoping for no power failure here and will report back when complete. Again thank you so much for all your advice.
The installation put me right back to where I was before. I signed in and then came up with the blank Big Sur screen for the fifth time I think. Then a little box popped up that said it could not get to my backup. Then it disappeared and I am still stuck without access to anything. What can I do next?
Do you have a Time Machine backup? I would install Big Sur again from Recovery after deleting the internal Macintosh HD. That would be a clean installation. Then restore your data from backup. It’s likely you had something installed that is not compatible with Big Sur.
Something went wrong with the upgrade. Boot the Mac into Recovery Mode by holding CMD+R while powering on. Then re-install Big Sur on top of your existing installation.
I have a 2017 iMac
Still cannot get into Recovery Mode via CMD + R?
I just checked my computer and now it says “about 12 hours and 49 minutes remaining??? I don’t think I will have internet without a power failure for that long here
