Does Home app have to be running on my Powerbook for HomePod to work automatically? I have Scenes and Automations set up and working.

Can HomePod be controlled by Home App on iMAc (not phone) I just set up a new imac which has Home and I see my Homepod. However is continues to show configuring (while playing music that i have no control over) Do I only control using my phone? Am I missing something?
