I need to record something and was told to have the reads peak at -12db, the industry standard. Does that mean I move the volume lever to -12?
I won't be able to talk very loud so want to make sure before I start working on it.

Generally, setting a volume level does not set a maximum, it is a relative adjustment.
You may need to use the compressor or limiter to enforce the -12 dB level.
