Does anyone know what this question mark icon means on the side of a favourite when I click on it that's when I get the 2nd pic? thanks.

It means it can't find the original item to which the alias in the SideBar pointed. Hold down the command key and drag the folder out of the SideBar until you see the X (maybe Remove), and drop it to make it go away.
