Contacts App update?

I have been struggling with the Contacts app on Mac for years and have gone to a few other apps with significant satisfaction, however, the native app is still essential and largely unusable. It is incredibly slow in doing very basic tasks and often crashed midstream.

Is Apple ever going to address this? Or are we always going to have to work around this massive deficiency?
