Contacts Application: When typing in the notes field, cursor disappears, can't add notes

This issue was addressed with the exact same question on April 7, 2021. It was unresolved.

I have been having the same issue for months. Since I have been using Contacts as a sort of “poor man’s CRM” for many years, with Notes within the app serving as a general information field, this is an exasperating problem. Sometimes the cursor disappears, making text impossible to enter, so frequently that entering data becomes a chore—the opposite of what one uses a computer for. If information is entered without looking at the screen (a normal and frequent occurrence), dozens of keystrokes may be entered before the loss is detected.

Since Apple has not provided a solution, I have resorted to entering the data in another app (usually TextEdit) and copying and pasting it to the contact where it belongs. It isn't an elegant solution, but preferable to constantly having to re-key information.

Note: it's a good idea to write long emails into TextEdit or another such app for similar reasons. We've all been victimized by losing emails after spending time composing them, haven't we?

Generally, I enter Edit mode before editing Contacts records. The problem occurs when Contacts is in Edit mode. I have made no attempt to analyze the effect on the problem of not being in Edit mode. It would be unnerving to find that the problem goes away when Edit mode is not invoked!

When users enter data while not in Edit mode, resultant problems can be ascribed to user error. The phenomenon described above is not a result of user error.

Just chiming in here with the same problem - happily typing away in the notes field for a contact, then look up and realize the cursor exited the field some time ago. The contact is not in edit mode (editing notes does not require it; only other fields do). Harris mentioned it might be due to iCloud syncing—it seems to occur frequently and randomly, so that kind of makes sense.

Update: Just been testing, it very reproducible for me. Big Sur, 11.6.1:

  • While not in edit mode, click into notes field for a contact
  • Type a few characters. wait
  • After five cursor flashes, cursor exits field. The typed characters are saved.

I'd be happy enough if the notes field could not be edited without being in edit mode. But this in-between behavior is frustrating.
