A Question of Admin rights on my Mac

I've got a question concerning whether I am truly the Administrator on my Mac and would welcome any help. I recently purchased a Canon Imageclass Printer/Scanner/Fax/Copier. I set it up on the Mac, and then printed a test. It seemed fine.

However, when I attempted to scan something, I received a pop-up dialog box stating 'You do not have permission to open the application 'Canon MFScanner1'.

I checked the permissions set on the files, and it listed read and write privileges for everyone, including myself and Admin.

It got me thinking-is there a way to see if my user account is actually the admin account?

I also have the inability to view certain system files on my Mac, and usually have to resort to terminal commands to make them appear, as the check box to view them will not appear in finder

I'm frankly lost as to how to handle this, and could use a little help. My old scanner worked fine for years, by the way...
