Printing issue

Hi, I am unable to scan from my HP Officejet Pro 8600 using system preferences since the last update to 11.5.2 macOS Big Sur. I keep getting a message that says: This operation couldn't be completed. (com.apple.imagecapture error 4294957375.) (-9921). Anyone have any ideas on why and how to fix. I used to have no problem now I have to use the HP Smart app to make it work.

Let's start with have you tried any of the following:

  • Contacted HP Support to see if they have an updated print driver/software for this printer to work with the latest version of macOS Big Sur? Ref: Set up your HP Printer - HP
  • Removed, and then, reinstalled this printer in System Preferences?
  • Reset the Mac's printing system? System Preferences > Printers & Scanners. Then right-click on this printer, and then, select "Reset printing system" Note: This not only resets and removes all printers, but it will also reset and remove all scanners and faxes from the Mac as well.

This message would mean that you don't have Administrator rights. Are you the only one using this Mac? If so, your user account should have these rights already. You can double-check by going to System Preferences > Users & Groups. Then select your user account. If it has administrator rights, there should be a checkmark next to "Allow user to administer this computer."


If it is already enabled, then I'm afraid I'm out of options for you to try.

Hmm, in my case, my HP is connected by Ethernet to my local network, as well as, the Mac ... which is running macOS Big Sur 11.5.2, as well. I don't use the HP Scan app, but the method via System Preferences works without any issues for me.


How are your two devices (Mac & HP) interconnected? Do you use a software firewall or any AV apps on your Mac?
