My iPhone needed to be updated. I started the update with the phone plugged in to charge. The phone is showing “verifying update” for 2 hrs. I am not able to turn phone off. What do I do?

My IPhone needed to be updated. I plugged my phone in and started charging and started the update. My phone now has been in “Verifying update” for 2 hours. I am not able to shut phone off, or do anything with the phone. What do I do?
