Deleting MobileSync contents

Is there any danger in deleting the iPhone backup files within the MobileSync folder and starting iPhone backups again from scratch? I sense the size of my iPhone backup file is larger than it should be and taking up valuable extra space on my Mac (for example when I delete 5GB worth of music on my iPhone and re-run an iPhone backup to my Mac, the backup file only drops by a few hundred MB).
