Mac Mail in El Capitan

I've been having all sorts of problems lately with Mail in El Capitan.

First, Mail started crashing every time I tried to access it. Following a suggestion I removed Com.Apple.Mail folder and com.Apple.MailServiceAgent folder from “~/Library/Containers”

to the desktop and restarted. The first time I did this it solved the problem for a couple of days, but then the crashing started up again. I did it a second time and, so far, it seems to have worked.

Second. I am now getting an alert and I can't receive or send mail in the Mail app.

I can send and receive mail via iCloud.

It's my understanding that I cannot just reinstall Mail and that I must reinstall El Capitan. However, for some reason, when I start up in macOS Recovery mode I'm unable to reinstall.

I'm at a loss as to what to do. Can anybody give me a clue?

Searching, I found an article from Apple Support that indicated I could get El Capitan using Safari to download it; which I did.

However, Mail is still shows the alert as shown in my original post.

I assume when the "new" El Capitan was installed, the "new" Mail app was also installed although it didn't solve the problem. I'm sure as **** baffled and really don't know what to do next.

Hi, I've had pretty much the same problem with not being able to receive mail since yesterday too (30th Aug 21).

The error I get is:-

There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “iCloud” or try again.

The server returned the error: Connections to the server “p61-imap.mail.me.com” on the default ports timed out.

I've just spent almost an hour on the phone with Apple and they can't offer a fix as the computer and OSX version is too old!

Well unfortunately I can't afford a new mac pro right now and am stuck with my 2008 version!

This mac is my main workhorse and I'm gutted. I really need this to work.

I can send iCloud mail, but not receive it. All other non apple mail is coming in just fine, so it's something that has been caused by Apple themselves imho.
