All of my contacts are now being shown twice, how do i fix this without spending hours de-duping manually?

Recently, my iphone 7 started showing all of my contacts 2x. I have not changed anything recently other than maybe app updates. Any ideas as to how to dedupe an entire contact list (over 1000 contacts) without manually consolidating them?

iPhone 7, iOS 14

  1. Make a copy of your contacts.
  2. Open Contacts.
  3. From the Card menu, select Card > Look for Duplicates.
  4. When asked, click Merge.
  5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until no duplicates are found.
  6. Make another copy of your iCloud Contacts.
