apple mail and gmail

Does anyone else have problems with search of gmail accounts in apple mail? Every time I try to search for an email in say a persons name I get about 4 responses when there are in fact many more emails. And it is not always the latest emails, the selection can be completely random and from years back. It is impossible to find anything in the search panel of apple mail.
