Can I charge an iPad with a USB socket? Or do I really need an adapter to charge my iPad? Otherwise I buy a USB socket instead of a normal socket.

As long as the USP port has the right amount of current, you can charge it no problem. Many USB ports, especially on older power strips and wall outlets don't have enough juice to charge newer iPads.
