Can you plug your Apple TV into a AV Receiver HDMI port that is connected to your TV or does the Apple TV HDMI have to be plugged directly into an available HDMI port on your TV?

Trying to utilize the 4k picture and stereo sound capabilities of a AppleTV 4k box.

Have Sony TV mounted on wall - connected to SONY AV receiver.
1. (Note we use the SONY ARC set-up to control other devices).
Currently have an HDMI 4k cable connected from AppleTV into HDMI 2 of a SONY AV unit.
Going to INPUT 2 on SONY TV - seeing some picture, but the connection is not stable.
1. This set-up also seems to confuse the SONY AV receiver as it switches to the ARC set-up (through INPUT 3).

Is this not the correct set-up? Should we just connect the Apple TV directly into HDMI 2 on the SONY TV and just place the Apple TV unit behind the TV on the wall? THANKS!

Apple TV →[HDMI]→ AV receiver →[HDMI]→ TV

is my preferred connection scheme. Make sure the AV receiver supports HDMI 2.0 4K HDR or better.

Apple TV →[HDMI]→ TV →[HDMI]→ AV receiver

is also fine, depending on TV passthrough capabilities. Especially with eARC on the TV is helpful.

CEC is used to control other devices, not ARC.
