Just set up a Brother AIO using AirPrint. Prints just fine, when I try to scan I get the error message:
Failed to open connection to the device (-21345). I have rebooted both the laptop and the printer. How can the computer not have a connection when it can print???

Yes, you are doing it right, but something is failing. If they have an ICA driver or some other scanning software you can install, it might fix the scanning problem. AirPrint has nothing at all to do with scanning.
thanks, I get the same error message with Image Capture. From what I've read from Apple I should be able to go into System Preferences, select the printer, click on "scan" and go. I can click on "scan" but the same error message keeps popping up. I may have to use a wire to connect the 2 devices.

AirPrint doesn’t scan. It’s just a print driver. Check if Brother provides an ICA scan driver for that AIO.
Can you see the scanner in Image Capture App?
