Amber Alert Stopping Alarms from sounding.

MY EXPERIENCE THIS MORNING:

This has happened once before as well. I go to sleep, playing a YouTube playlist of white noise to help to fall asleep. I wake up late for work. I grab my phone, ( iPhone Xr) pressing the button on the side. I do this to check the time. As soon as I press the button, my morning alarms start going off. My 7:00 alarm sounds first then as soon as I dismiss it, my 7:20 alarm goes off… the time is 7:45.

I notice later that I have an amber alert notification. This is odd because I was never woken up overnight to an Amber alert sounding.

(FYI Amber alerts are a type Government emergency alert system for missing children in Canada)

WHAT I THINK IS HAPPENING:

  • My phone is preventing my alarm(s) from sounding because it thinks an amber alert is currently sounding
  • when I press a button on my phone, it dismisses the amber alert and allows my normal alarms to sound in order
  • something is preventing the amber alert from audibly sounding. Maybe YouTube?

Does anyone know what might be causing this or how to prevent this in the future? I don’t want to have to disable government alerts.

Hello JayBok,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like an amber alert possibly prevented your alarms from sounding. We'd like to help.

Take a look at the information in How to set and manage alarms on your iPhone, specifically the section under "If the alarm volume is too low or quiet."

Are you able to create a new alarm and then test to see if this issue persists? Or maybe turn off audio or not use the Youtube app to test? It might be helpful to reach out to Youtube Support to inquire about how the app, its Settings, and how they might interfere with an amber alert. Here's How to contact an app developer.

Take care.

JayBok,

Did you try contacting the app developer to inquire about how content playing in the app would be affected by an amber alert? Whether the content playing or pausing would be expected behavior?

Has this ever happened before? If not or you're not sure, it's possible that at the time the device was unresponsive because of an app. We would suggest ensuring the iOS on the device is updated to the latest available version. Back up and then Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch .

Have a nice day.
