hp scanner in Big Sur

After upgrading to Big Sur, my ability to scan disappeared. I get a message that I don't have permission to open the application HP scanner and to contact my computer or network administrator for assistance, whoever that may be. I looked at advice from hp re Catalina and reset the printing system. But that did not work. So I am hoping someone here can help.

A second issue is my Apple ID. After the upgrade, it no longer works. I didn't think I would be able to get on here without it, but when I used Safari's saved email/password, it did let me in. I know my Apple ID, so I can't imagine why typing it doesn't work.

FYI--I finally found instructions that worked and were very simple and did not cost anything. Essentially, Go to Folder, type "Library/Image Capture/Devices", click Return, then double click the app named in the error message. Close the window. They say this issue will be fixed in a future software update.

Your HP software may be a 32 bit app and Big Sur will only run 64 bit apps. There are things you can do however to get your scanner operational. First restart in Safe Mode How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support. Then once you have done that restart normally.

Next, open Image Capture which is pre-installed on the Mac and see if it finds your Scanner and use IC for your scanning app. Refer to Scan images in Image Capture on Mac - Apple Support. If the scanner is extremely old and IC cannot find the scanner there is another step.

You can navigate to VueScan Scanner Software for macOS Big Sur, Windows 10, and Linux (hamrick.com) and VueScan almost certainly will work. You can down load a free trial version and if you are satisfied with it (most users are) then you can buy it. We have some users on these forums that have scanners over 20 years old that successfully use VueScan.
