backupd excessive ram usage

I have had to give up on Time Machine backups until I can get to the bottom of this.

When I first noticed this is was more sporadic but now it does it every time TM tries to run. I know I can try wiping the HD and starting afresh but I'd rather do that as a last resort and try to keep the historical versioning if possible.

Whenever TM starts to run the backupd process just slowly gobbles up RAM until the machine become unusable. Today TM got up to 103.36GB used and eventually just killed the machine to the point where I only could use the power button to restart it.

It doesn't even look like TM get to the point where it is copying data as it states it's "Preparing backup...".

Any thoughts?

Update

I think one of the issues may have been the inclusion of multiple node_module folders I use for web development – although these are only a few hundred meg each they do contain thousands of small files. This might have killed TM when it was "preparing" to do the backup.

Excluding these and offloading a lot of old stuff to a server has got the TM estimated size down to 526 GB. Time Machine is now running as expected and the backupd process now doesn't go above 200mb RAM usage.

thanks for the steer everyone.

Thank you for the Etrecheck Report :-)

It does not like good.

1 - Firstly - this is a Fusion Drive with a small SSD 28 GB in size coupled with a Mechanical HD 7000 RPM. Even at this speed and small SSD - this machine is going to perform less fast than running off the Full SSD large enough for your storage needs

2 - AntiVirus - is going to do zero beyond cause havoc with the OS and may even more. The Built-in Security is all that is required.

3 - The TM Backup drive is reported as too small. It will struggle to backup and remove outdated backups all at the same time. Normally and good practice is for the drive to be at least 1.5 to 4 times larger than the Internal Drive

4 - It reports there are out-dated 32 bit application install that are not compatible with Mojave. Go64 may help identify the Apps

5 - Then there is a Avast Software for Ransomeware. That is covered in The Built-in Security

6 - Then TunnelBear VPN - Commercial VPNs should only be used if Mandated by Corporate Head Office for working remotely. Otherwise - ones Privacy and Security touted by the VPN is suspect.

Copy and Paste aspects from Etrecheck Report below

More than one antivirus app - This computer has multiple antivirus apps installed.

Antivirus software: Apple, Objective-See, and Malwarebytes

Small backup drive - Time Machine backup drive is too small.

System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

32-bit Apps - This computer has 32-bits apps will not work on current versions of the operating system.

Delete these files & restart...

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.avast.init.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.avast.update.plist

/Library/LaunchAgents/com.avast.userinit.plist

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

More background: this issue has only been happening over the past year, I have been using our current software combination for over 5 years.

Additional info in response to your comments:

1 - I know a fusion is not as fast as just using an SSD (I run my home mini off a Samsung T7) but I'd have thought it wouldn't impact backupd RAM usage?

2&5 - The Avast & MalwareBtyes was/is not actively running, only used as part of my problem-solving toolbox, Avast is no longer on the system but there is leftover cruft. I do have RansomWhere, KnockKnock & BlockBlock installed - I have been using these for the past 5 years – I imagine Apples own offerings have improved since then but not sure if they do the same stuff?

4 - As far as I was aware, Mojave is the last macOS that will run 32-bit apps (they wacom/logitech/littleSnitch/tunnelbear all run fine) this is why we have not upgraded to Catalina which is 64bit only.

6 - TunnelBear is not actively running, we only use it to test websites to spoof our location.

3 - Blimey, hadn't noticed how my HD used space has built up over time. There is a lot I can cull, when we got the machine I was hovering around the 400GB mark on average. Offloaded a load of old Adobe software and old stuff to the server. Also, all my excluded TM folders seem to have gotten reset so set those up again. The HD is down to 651 GB and the TM estimated size is now 541 GB. This is now more in keeping with the 1TB external drive.

I'll have to finish moving files over to the server overnight and see if this has helped TM when I'm back in the morning.

To add to P. Phillips excellent summary:

1)

Mounted Volumes:

disk2s1 - Macintosh HD

1.03 TB (Shared - 934.05 GB used, 86.40 GB free)

You have less than 10 percent free space on your hard drive which, when combined with a nearly full backup drive:

disk3s2 - T**********e

999.69 GB (986.25 GB used, 13.44 GB free)

can hamper any backup scheme.

2) Please add App Cleaner to things that need to be kicked to the curb. Catlike, Macs have cleaned themselves for 20 years. Adding dreck like that only interferes with some very elegant self-maintenance routines you paid Apple to build into the system. Let your Mac be a Mac.

3) Even considering you have 24GB RAM, IMHO you have FAR too many User log-in items. I believe half can be cleaned out for better responsiveness.

4) Your drive performance:

Performance:

System Load: 3.12 (1 min ago) 2.93 (5 min ago) 2.31 (15 min ago)

Nominal I/O speed: 18.31 MB/s

File system: 25.40 seconds

Write speed: 330 MB/s

Read speed: 1490 MB/s

Although your Write speeds are on the low end of "normal," overall drive performance is still "in the zone" based of a collection of similar drive reports I've been collecting.

500 MBps is more typical, but your Write speeds may well improve dramatically when you free up some space on Macintosh HD.

No I haven't but as TM kicks in every hour, having to quit everything and stop working until TM finishes will not really work (as I will only be able to work for 45min out of the hour). Plus I don't think freeing up 15 GB would really help as backupd's ram usage will keep increasing until the system becomes unresponsive.

I've tried in the past to do TM updates overnight, but it just means in the morning I came to an unusable system with TM stuck at "preparing backup" and backupd showing excessive RAM usage.

It sort of defeats the purpose of TM being a background process. Backupd should never be using 100+ GB to do it's thing.

Thanks for the additional info

1 - I'm in the process of getting this down to 651 GB giving me 35% free space.

2 - So can macOS now delete all the cruft left by deleted apps automatically? eg (LaunchDaemons, Application Support, Preferences, Library Items, HelperTools, etc).

3 - I'm not sure if there is much to cull here are here. I've quickly gone through it and dumped 7 (18%) (Find Any File Hotkey, HiddenMe Helper, Display Menu Helper, LoginHelper, LaunchAtLoginHelper, SkyFonts, Monotype SkyFontsHelper). 5 are for apps I use now and then (CCC User Agent, Evernote Login Helper, MountyHelper, TeamViewerMeetingLoginItem, TunnelBearHelper) and the rest are for things I use everyday all day – 10 of which as just normal apps so they are all pre-launched for when I get into work and I don't need to then wait for them to open.
