Length of time for computer to download software update for iPhone

I’ve connected my cell phone to my Mac laptop to update as described in this article. It’s been several hours but the message continues to say “Your Mac is downloading a software update for this iPhone and will install it when the download is complete.” should this be taking so long without anything else happening except the Update and Restore buttons being grayed out?
