How do you recover deleted messages from iPhone 10 max?

Go to:
Settings > Your Name, iCloud, etc.
Tap iCloud
Are Messages turned on (green)?
If yes, the messages you deleted cannot be restored.
If no AND you have a backup from before you deleted the messages, you can restore your iPhone from that backup BUT any messages sent or received after the date of the backup will be gone.
