Even after 11.5.2 Update, most Apps on both my Macs cannot use Flexible Space in the Toolbar. Displays a single thin line. Had to resort to using multiple Fixed Spaces.
Just a bit of an annoyance really.
Have you installed or run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up" or anti-virus apps on your Mac?
Try the following: boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support and see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and check again.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Anyway, LOL. Worked out what software has the problem with Flexible Toolbar Spacing. It's Software that hasn't been updated to accommodate the Toolbar Style of Big Sur (Window Control Button positioning is different).
Interestingly, a couple of mine have been updated, but only to remove the option of customising the Toolbar. Suggests to me, it was easier for them to remove the option completely rather than fix the problem.
Don't get me wrong, I like the visuals of Big Sur, but with having so much Productivity Software I rely on and unwilling to spend hundreds of pounds again for QuarkXpress Pro, for example, which has served me well in Mojave or spend more work time on it, I've cloned my BS Install to an external Thunderbolt SSD for safe keeping, wiped the internal SSD and Restored my last Mojave Backup back to it, Perfect.
Sorry Apple, good try, but Big Sur is not for me, not with my usage anyway.
First, there is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac. This user tip describes what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community.
There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs. There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.
Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear. They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware. Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.
There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is desshoigned solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it. The free version is more than adequate for most users.
Also, unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer's or bank's servers, they are useless from a privacy standpoint: Public VPN's are anything but private.
I suggest you uninstall BitDefender according to the developer's instructions.
Thanks for the Info. I will look into that when not busy working. It is on both iMacs though.
Examples: Bean WP, Nisus Writer Pro, Cot Editor, Swift Publisher 5, Pixelmator Pro (was like it, but App Update has dropped the flexible space option), iStudio Publisher. To name a few. Barring Bean, all from App Store. The only Anti-Virus is Bitdefender (App Store) On-Demand and not running. Only ever used Bitdefender at a later date well after the OS Install, to check the odd direct DL.
Out of interest, I did try Restoring a Mojave Backup to an external SSD. Booted to that and all Apps are fine.
To be honest, after going through the Apps affected and applying fixed spacing instead, I'm not in a hurry to look into it further at the moment, being work busy.
