How to force iphone and ipad to eject when they are stuck trying to sync

Both my iPhone and iPad are in the sidebar for my Mac. I'm running Big Sur 11.3.1 on the MacBook, iOS 14.7.1 on the iPhone, and latest iOS on the iPad Pro.

Sometimes, the fan starts up on the MacBook, and I see that the Finder is taking significant energy. The sidebar shows me that the devices are trying to sync. But after 8 hours, they haven't made any progress.

Trying to cancel the sync doesn't work.

Trying to eject the devices from the sidebar doesn't work.

Doing a right-click on the device names and trying to eject them doesn't work.

Connecting the device to the Mac with an Apple cable while it's stuck trying to sync doesn't work.

Trying to log off doesn't work because the Mac thinks it's in the middle of a sync and refuses to log off or shut down.

The only thing that works is to do a hard reboot on the MacBook — and after a few days, the sync problem will start again.

For the last hour, the fan has been running while the machine tries to sync. The machine refused to stop trying to sync just now. I relaunched the Finder and shut down every app, but the system would not shut down because it believed an operation was still running. I was unable to cancel the sync or eject the iPhone. There is not way to log off or shut down except to do a hard reboot.

Any other suggestions?

I shutting down the phone, but the Mac still was trying to sync to it. I tried connecting the phone to the Mac with a cable, but it was still stuck.

Here's a photo that shows that the phone was still trying to sync despite no other application running.
