I am trying to reinstall the OS on my daughters i Mac and have followed all the instructions but it now showing the install screen saying OS X El Capitan. It is showing a disk that says Recovery HD and when i select install is says it cannot be installed on Recovery HD

I’m gonna guess this unspecified Mac is an iMac, and you’ll want to look at the bottom of the foot for the serial number.
Recovery is what you booted Recovery from. If you’re viewing all devices, then the internal storage (an old hard disk?) has probably failed. If so… Installing on an external storage device (Thunderbolt or USB 3, not USB 2.0!) can provide a work-around for failed internal storage.
Use the http://checkcoverage.apple.com/ website to get the Mac model and Mac model year and post both model and year, and post some info on what has happened leading up the the re-install, and we might be able to tailor some replies with more specific suggestions…
