How to stop Safari auto-capitalization of email addresses?

Safari capitalises names (personal names and institution acronyms) contained in email addresses, which is obviously my username for many services. Sometimes this causes my username not to be recognised and I have to go in and change individual letters back to lower-case, which often recapitalize again. It is very annoying.

This question was asked a decade ago(!) but it doesn't seem to have been resolved.

Does anyone know how to fix it?

(Note: I have auto-capitalisation turned off in System Preferences > Keyboard. Within Safari, I have autofill turned off for 'Using information from my contacts'.)

bruminie,

Thanks so much for letting us know.

Since the issue only happens in Safari, can you let us know if you've had the opportunity to try clearing the browsing history? If so, did that seem to improve the issue at all? More about that here: Clear your browsing history in Safari on Mac

Do you currently have any available updates showing for your Mac? Keep your Mac up to date

Prior to updating or making any changes to your Mac, we'd suggest making sure you have a recent backup. You can find more about backing up your Mac here: Back up your Mac

Take care!

Hello bruminie,

It seems like names are being capitalized automatically in Safari, and you want to prevent that, correct? We want to help out.

Just to confirm, does this only happen in Safari, or do you experience the same behavior in other browsers or applications as well?

You mentioned that you have automatic capitalization turned off; just to confirm, are you referring to the "Capitalize words automatically" setting being turned off from the Apple menu > System Preferences > Keyboard > Text?

You can find some great information about autocorrection and automatic capitalization here: Check spelling and grammar on Mac

If that behavior only occurs in certain websites, please check out this link for some helpful information on how to manage website settings in Safari: Customize settings for each website in Safari on Mac

Thanks!

Hello again,

Thanks for your suggestions but unfortunately they have not helped. I've deleted all Safari browser history and all cookies and my Mac is up to date (Big Sur 11.6), but it's still happening.

For reference, here is the thread indicating that this problem existed as early as 2011: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2790021

I've made a bug report to Apple. Hopefully it will be fixed.

Yes, it only happens in Safari, but no, it doesn't just happen with specific websites. It happens on any website, every time I have to enter my email in a username field.

Yes, that's right - I have the "Capitalize words automatically" setting turned off.

As for that article, it does not help, unfortunately. I also have “Correct spelling automatically” etc. turned off. :-(
