Whole word doc keeps deleting while typing

my 96 year old grandfather is using a new mac and keeps asking me why when he is typing a word document he will look up and the whole document is deleted. I am sure it is something he is hitting any idea what this could be?? I came up with Command +A and then delete. Is there anything else it might be, trying to solve this for him as it is very frustrating. Thank you!
