It used to be that I could just hover my mouse pointer over the music file and it would change the icon to a multimedia control. You could then play the file without having to open it. That functionality seems to have stopped working after the last update. This still works for PDF files but not music files.

I download those files again and now it works. Apparently something changed during the upgrade to Big Sur. So the problem as far as I can tell was possible corrupted files. Moving the originals to the trash and downloading again worked.

Got it. Let's help to narrow this down a bit by creating a test user account to see if the same behavior happens there. This will let us know if it's a system-wide issue or only within your account. Just in case, here's how to create that user: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I created a test account but it doesn't work there either. The closest you can get to that functionality is by opening the file with quicklook. Before, hovering your mouse pointer over the file would change the icon to an icon with a play button on it.

No, it was not dropped. I am running Big Sur 11.6. See:

MP3. The same files that did open before.
It changed between Catalina and Big Sur. This is in the finder.
Is this a setting that can be changed? I’m either missing something or maybe this is a bug?
Not that I know of. As far as I can tell, it is always available.
What type of audio files are you looking at?
