What would cause my phone to drop the call every time I call a company where I am asked to press one or two or three for a specific department.? When I press the number for the department, the cold fails every time.

This feature is called DTMF tones. DTMF tones are used with the voice network by your carrier to signal dialing equipment, and also used to make choices with automatic voice response equipment.
For support with this, you would want to contact your cellular service provider.
