updates on Apple MacBook Pro

How does one download and install needed system updates for MacBook Pro late 2011 edition to be able to install wanted applications into MacBook? It keeps stating that there are no updates available and I am confused as to why when I need that certain update level in order to download apps. Thank you in advance for your help and advice?!?

Hi,

The latest macOS for MacBook Pro 2011 is High Sierra which is available at following site.

As system software versions evolves, they require more robust hardware support. The MacBook Pro is a prime example. To upgrade beyond OS 10.13 High Sierra, the computer requires hardware support for a graphics technology called "Metal." It was not until 2012 that Macs had that Metal capability.

As this is a hardware issue and graphics hardware on a MacBook Pro cannot be changed after leaving the factory, your cannot add something to your existing Mac to get Metal support.
